The New Peoplemaking

<가족 힐링>은 The New peoplemaking이라는 원제로 1988년 출간된 버지니아 사피어의 대표적 저서이다. 그녀는 사피어식 접근법과 함께 '가족 치유의 어머니'라 불리는 가족치료 분야의 대가이다. 문제 있는 가족과 대면할 때마다 몸으로 고통스럽고 불편한 반응이 먼저 온다할 만큼 영적이며 실제 '영혼의 힘'을 굳게 믿는 사피어. 그래서인지 <가족 힐링>은 단순히 더 건강한 가족 관계를 이야기하는 데서 넘어서서 보다 인간다운 인간으로의 성장을 촉구하는 잠언서처럼 읽히기도 한다. 실제 사피어 평생의 활동은 "보다 인간다워지기 (becoming more fully human)"에 대한 경건한 갈망 하에 이루어졌다.

 

 

 

 

불완전하며 인간에 불과하다. 자식으로서도 어른으로서도 부모로서도. 그 불완점함을 인정하고 자각하며 더 나은 인간으로 성장하려는 노력을 게을리 하지 않을 때 가족에 보다 큰 웃음과 행복이 찾아드는 것이다.

사피어는 이를 '자존감, 가족간 소통, 규칙, 사회와의 관계'의 네 가지로 압축하여 이야기를 진행하고 있다.

“I am Me. In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me. Everything that comes out of me is authentically mine, because I alone chose it -- I own everything about me: my body, my feelings, my mouth, my voice, all my actions, whether they be to others or myself. I own my fantasies, my dreams, my hopes, my fears. I own my triumphs and successes, all my failures and mistakes. Because I own all of me, I can become intimately acquainted with me. By so doing, I can love me and be friendly with all my parts. I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me, and other aspects that I do not know -- but as long as I am friendly and loving to myself, I can courageously and hopefully look for solutions to the puzzles and ways to find out more about me. However I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time is authentically me. If later some parts of how I looked, sounded, thought, and felt turn out to be unfitting, I can discard that which is unfitting, keep the rest, and invent something new for that which I discarded. I can see, hear, feel, think, say, and do. I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive, and to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me. I own me, and therefore, I can engineer me. I am me, and I am Okay.”

버지니아 사피어에게 '가족은 세상을 압축해 놓은 소우주The family is a microcosm' 이기에 건강한 가족관계는 한 발 두 발 나아가 거시적으로 보면, 세계의 평화로 나아가는 근간이 된다. 관계망과 지지체계의 형성을 중요시 한 사피어는 실제, 1970년에 The International Human Resources Network(IHLRN)를, 1977년에는 The Avanta Network(Avanta의 전신)을 설립하였다. 스스로를 가족 치료사라 칭하지만 어찌보면 버지니아 사피어는 '존엄성과 자존감이 지켜지는 평화로운 세계'를 꿈꾸는 지구 공동체의 치유자 같다는 인상이다. <가족 힐링>을 통해 처음 알게 된, 버지니아 사피어의 이름. 한 권 한 권 그녀의 저서를 탐독해 나가야 겠다.
