MY SWORDHAND IS SINGING ¸®ºä:

When I first found out we were reading a vampire gothic novel for school, I immediately thought that I wouldn¡¯t enjoy it. I was sick of all those modern interpretations of vampires, where vampires go to school instead of stalking the living to consume their blood, and fall in love instead of killing them. But it turned out that the book was nothing like that, and I loved it.

It centers around two characters, Peter and his father, Thomas, who has only recently settled down in the outskirts of a small town named Chust, and works as woodcutters. They have their own problems, such as Thomas being a taciturn drunkard, and the villagers being suspicious about them and etc., but stranger things start happening in Chust. Unusual deaths keep happening in the village and there have been reports of dead people revisiting their family at night. Thomas denies that he knows anything about what¡¯s happening, but that does not fool Peter. Helped by a young gypsy girl named Sophia, he is determined to find out and get rid of the supernatural threat that lurks in the woods of Chust.

Marcus Sedgewick¡¯s My Swordhand is Singing is a gothic horror novel that is set in Eastern Europe in around 17th century. The fact that it is so traditional, complete with real customs and beliefs, makes it so different from other vampire books I have read. The action takes place during the winter, in forests and snow-covered cemeteries.

There is no love relationships between a human and a vampire, but is a broken relationship between father and son. For the most parts of the book, Thomas is an alcoholic who uses alcohol to drown his sorrows, but at the end of the book, we can catch a glimpse of their love, that we all thought was lost.

This book is heart-stopping gothic novel that is perfectly paced and written, that includes action and at the same time, redemption, love and loss. I was so into it.

I recommend this book to students or children who are looking for a horror story, scary enough to be worth reading, but without that much of gore and horror.
