영국의 추리 소설 작가. 영국의 기사 작위를 받아 데임 칭호를 받았다. 메리 웨스트매컷이란 필명으로 연애소설을 집필하기도 하였으나 80여편의 추리소설의 필명인 애거서 크리스티란 필명으로 대중에게 널리 알려지며, "추리소설의 여왕(Queen of Crime)" 이라 불리게 된다. 그녀의 작품은 영어권에서 10억부 이상 팔렸으며 103개의 언어로 번역된 다른 언어판 역시 10억부 이상 판매되어 기네스 세계 기록에 등재되었다. 이와 같은 기록은 세익스피어와 견줄만 한 것. 또한 그녀의 희곡 ’쥐덫’은 1955년 런던에서 초연된 이래 2007년 현재까지 공연 중. And Then There Were None

아가사 크리스티의 명성, 인지도는 꽤 높음에도 작품을 제대로 읽은 적이 없는 것 같았다. 유명한 단편 소설 몇 권을 어린 시절에 접했던 것이 전부. 그래서 그 동안 읽어보고 싶었던 그녀의 작품 중 가장 끌렸던 소설을 집어보았다. 제목부터 장르에 대한 기대감을 엄청 증폭시키기에.. 그런데 말 그대로 ’유명한 플롯’이 되어서인지 이곳저곳에서 많이 본 것 같다는 익숙한 느낌이 있었던 것이 사실. 하지만 다른 북피니언의 언급처럼 그 시절 영국으로 돌아가 신선한 두뇌로 이 소설을 읽었다면 ’아가사 크리스티 홀릭’에 동요되어 열병에라도 걸린 양 허겁지겁 그녀의 모든 책을 탐독했을  것이다.

역시 추리소설의 묘미는, 페이지를 덮을 수 없는 긴박감 아닐까. 잠들기 전 며칠 동안 읽었는데 어깨를 오싹하게 만드는 기운과 함께 범인에 대한 궁금증으로 결국 수면시간은 급 줄어들고 말았다. 줄거리를 요약해보고자 했으나, 큰 스포일러가 될듯하여 생략해본다. 책도 괜찮았지만, 나로서는 작가에 대한 관심과 애정이 더 커져 그녀의 비화와 삶을 추적해보는 재미가 컸다.
